Is PVC leather waterproof or not?

Is PVC leather waterproof or not? The answer is affirmative.
It is essentially a layer of polyvinyl chloride plastic film covering a base fabric (such as nylon or polyester), which is like putting a raincoat on the material, naturally blocking water and moisture.
Let’s first talk about why PVC leather is waterproof. It has a dense plastic coating on its surface, and water droplets falling on it will roll off directly. It can withstand daily spills and rainwater completely (such as raincoats and waterproof shoe covers).
However, its waterproof ability has limitations:
1. Afraid of long-term immersion in water
If the joint is not sealed, water vapor will seep into the base layer from the edge, causing delamination and bulging (commonly seen in floor leather);
Long term immersion in water (such as pond operations) may cause cracking of thin PVC (<0.4mm).
2. Afraid of chemical corrosion
Concentrated hydrochloric acid and strong solvents can dissolve the surface of PVC ⚠️, Directly drill holes.
3. Outdoor durability
After exposure to direct sunlight, it is prone to aging and becoming brittle. It may crack and leak after 1-2 years of exposure to ultraviolet radiation (not suitable for long-term outdoor use).
4. Poor breathability
Waterproof but sweaty, wearing a PVC raincoat in summer feels like a “sauna”.
Therefore, PVC leather is sufficient for daily rain and splash protection, but it should be carefully selected for long-term immersion in water or outdoor exposure.
